The Art of Photography, and How it has Taught me Patience
Steve and I have spent many years working in the field taking photographs of nature. Gosh, I can’t tell you the hours of hiking that we’ve done, seeking out the perfect location and vantage point. Hours of walking, in the woods, through the sand, up hill, in the snow, 5 miles, both ways…you get the point that I’m trying to make here.
Countless hours of sitting on the ground and on hard rocks just waiting for the light to be just right to capture the best image possible. I’m not sure if your aware but when your out working in the field you arrive at your location well in advance and then it’s just a matter of waiting for the light to be just right. Sometimes it cooperates with you, but often it just doesn’t.
That being said I will say that I’m actually thankful for all of this “wait time”. Over the years it has taught me patience. We live in such hurried times, leading busy lives. We’re always rushing to and from, and so much of what we do depends on a time frame or schedule. Waiting for the perfect light for a photograph has taught me to have patience. Some of my best thinking and clarity and motivation has come to me while quietly waiting for the light
While out photographing in the field often times we fight harshest weather that mother nature can dish out. Again, more patience. From a deluge rain shower, to the blazing sun. Sometime you must hike back to your car in the “dark” I’m afraid of the dark, especially when I’m out in the woods and have forgotten my flashlight. Step by slow step we make our way back to our car. What does all of this come back to? Patience.
Searching for the most beautiful scene,
waiting for the light to be just right,
capturing the image in camera,
creating the final image for print...
This all takes patience, and this I have come to develop over time and with the help of my artistic craft of photography.
