Keeping it Simple
A Short Funny Story about Camera Gear
So why are we passionate about photography? Is it the equipment? No, as a matter of fact let me share with you a short humorous story. One late afternoon, about an hour or so before sunset we were hiking just outside of Sedona Arizona. We were in an area that was known for beautiful sunsets so we weren’t the only visitors to the area. As part of our usual routine we parked our vehicle and Steve put on his camera gear backpack but instead I decided to place my medium format camera on the tripod and hike with it that way as we weren’t going very far. Now mind you, a medium format camera is fairly large. It really screams “professional”.
After a short time we approach the area that we wanted to photograph and another couple was making their way back off the trail. The gentleman turns to me and says “wow, that’s quite the camera”, and without a thought I responded with “ahhh…it’s just a box with a hole in it”.
Now that statement just really summed up how I feel about photography and the equipment. Some photographers get so hung up in all of the gear. You see them walking with two cameras hanging from their neck, gear bags, four or five lenses. Now I agree, the quality of your camera is important. There’s no denying that. But when it comes right down to it, a camera is a box with a hole in it that let’s in light. As artists and photographers we can never lose sight of that. Creatively speaking, it's not the camera, it's what happens in front of it that is what really counts.
