Dry Falls, Highlands North Carolina

I think I'll put this location on my top list of favorite waterfalls that I have ever visited in my lifetime. It's not the height of the falls or the amount of water flowing over the edge that makes them so special. What's so unique about these falls is that you can get incredibly close to them. So close in fact that you're underneath the falls!dry_falls

Incredibly, you stay dry when on the trail (see the fence in the image). Hence the name "dry falls". It's a bit misty under the falls so you wouldn't want to hang out there for a significant amount of time, but just a few moments is all it takes to get inspired by the rush of the water that's passing by just a few yards away. The sound changes, the air changes. I swear you can feel the ion's in the air. It's such a fantastic experience!

If you ever find yourself in the mountains of western North Carolina make it a point to visit Dry Falls. You'll find them on route US64 between the towns Franklin and Highlands. There is a convenient place to park and the hike is very short and not difficult by any means.
